Are You Building Your Skillset?

Developing your skills is your responsibility. Do not always rely on people to help you build your way up your career path. You need to take control of your career development. Work on yourself and your skillset to add value to the organization you work for as well as for your own career development.
Even if your organization doesn’t offer training as part of employee development, there are several things you can do to work your way toward that next promotion or remain competitive in your field.

Read this:

1. Read educative books, articles, blog posts and forums. You can dedicate 30 minutes every day to learn about things in your industry from top thought leaders.
2. Join professional organizations in your industry. Many of them provide training, events, and conferences to enable professionals to connect with mentors who can offer valuable advice/tips and expand your knowledge.
3. Take online classes. There are quite affordable courses.
4. Learn new things from your colleagues at work. Familiarize yourself with what others are working on. Find out projects or tasks you will be interested in learning more about. Ask other teams or department if you could help out on an assignment or even shadow someone for a day.
